"THE BOTERELS MAY BE TOADS, BUT THEY'RE MY TOADS!"

"THE BOTERELS MAY BE TOADS, BUT THEY'RE MY TOADS!"

Even though the Earl of Richmond and other nobles were part of the extended family, the Cornish/Shropshire Boterels were minor nobility.
There had been much sniggering over Nicholas Boterel's relationship with King William II.  There was more when William, Nicholas' son, was induced to marry one of Henry I's cast-off mistresses in 1110, until the irate king turned on the gossips.
Even so, later generations of Boterels changed the three toads device on their shield for a different Boterel coat of arms.
